Empowering Leaders and Talents

Senior MediaKids are given opportunity to guide Junior primary students and Junior MediaKids to hone their leadership skills. Selected members are selected to take part in various national photography competitions to gain exposure, build confidence and apply their photography skills. All MediaKids will be given opportunities to take the role of official photographers for school events, to develop team spirit and confidence.

Confidence in Media Technology

MediaKids expressed their artistic talent and creative voice at the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) 2019 celebrations. They were specially selected by MOE based on photographs they had taken previously, and received mentoring by a professional photographer through a masterclass format. They then applied their learning in an authentic way through capturing photographic and iconic moments for SYF celebrations in the community held at Bukit Panjang Plaza on 7 July 2019.

Commemorating World Water Day

For World Water Day 2020, MediaKids celebrated water as the lifeblood of our community and raised awareness on water conservation and water sustainability through photography. They captured the uses of water in our daily lives, and created patterns through the use of water.

Special Events with Local Sportsmen and Sportswomen

In line with the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, our students embarked on a project to gather inspirational stories and messages from our local sportsmen and sportswomen. On September 2019, we invited Singapore’s very own football legend, Mr Fandi Ahmad to our school.

MediaKids took photographs of the event, of him being interviewed by our student leaders and conducting a football clinic for our boys in the Football CCA group.

In 2020, we met our nation’s World Number 1 Para Archer, Ms Nur Syahidah Alim.

Aqeel, our Primary 4 MediaKid, not only captured the session through his lenses, but was also inspired to overcome challenges and pursue his dreams.

Bicentennial-Themed Coffee Table Book

To commemorate the Singapore Bicentennial, MediaKids worked on a Bicentennial-themed coffee table book, “Singapore Through Children’s Eyes” which was presented to President Halimah Yacob on 28 July 2019. President Halimah had written a foreword for the book, which was supported by the Singapore Bicentennial Office.

eCCA – Helping Our Students to Stay Safe and Stay Curious

“See how we have spaced out the ice cubes and the glass? Let’s try taking this shot by holding your tablet lower so that you can capture the ice cubes leading to the glass,” said Mr Dinesh, our MediaKids CCA teacher.

Mr Dinesh was showing our MediaKids how to apply the photography technique, Leading Lines. The hands-on activity in school was a follow-up from the eCCA session which our MediaKids attended in Term 3 Week 6.

CCAs have been suspended since the beginning of Term 2 but we wanted to ensure continuity of learning for our MediaKids. The eCCA session took the form of asynchronous learning on Student Learning Space (SLS). SLS lessons with video tutorials on photography techniques such as Rule of Thirds and Leading Lines were assigned to our MediaKids for them to complete at their own pace. MediaKids also engaged in collaborative learning when they shared their ideas for their photography set-up on SLS and received feedback from their peers. The eCCA session empowered the MediaKids to own their learning.

“eCCA is a new experience and I enjoy it because I can learn more about the photography techniques and get ideas at my own pace. I can watch the videos again anytime, should I need to refer to them for additional ideas,” said Jeffrey.

Back in school, Safe Management Measures (SMM) were strictly adhered to when CCA was carried out face to face. MediaKids were scheduled for their hands-on activity such that there was no intermingling of students from different classes. There were fewer than 5 MediaKids at any time. All props were handled by the teachers only and wiped down after each slot. The tablets were clearly labelled and assigned specifically to individual MediaKids, and wiped down after the hands-on activity.

The photographs taken by the Mediakids were then reviewed by our external trainer and his feedback was shared via SLS. The students gained further insights into how to frame their shots and give their subjects a greater focus.

Wei Ting shared, “I learnt that taking photographs from multiple angles gives different perspectives to the same object.”
